A monthly read on South African food prices, measured from the real shelf prices we track across Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Clicks, Dis-Chem and Makro. The index starts at 100 in our first month - 110 means the same basket costs 10% more. Not an official stat; it’s what’s actually on the shelf.

How it’s measured
Each month we take the average (geometric mean) price change across products we see in both that month and the one before (matched pairs, so products entering or leaving the catalogue don’t distort the trend, and implausible jumps from pack-size changes are excluded), chained from a base of 100. It’s not an official inflation statistic - it reflects the real shelf prices LoyaltyHub tracks. Free to cite and embed with a link to this page.
