Grocery Price API Terms

Last updated 1 October 2026

These terms cover the Loyalty Hub Grocery Price API (the “API”) and the data it returns (the “Data”). The API is run by Afrikan Apps Studio (“we”, “us”). “You” means the person or organisation that holds the API account. By creating an API key or calling the API, you agree to these terms. If you’re signing up for a company, you confirm you’re allowed to bind it.

The general Loyalty Hub Terms of Use and Privacy Policy also apply. Where they conflict with these terms on anything to do with the API, these terms win.

1. Your licence

While your account is in good standing, we give you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Data in your own apps, websites and internal tools, including paid and commercial products. You may not sublicense it except as section 3 allows.

2. What you can do

  • Show prices to your users, including paying subscribers.
  • Calculate things from the Data, such as basket totals, cross-retailer comparisons, estimated savings, alerts and charts. What you calculate is yours.
  • Cache and store the Data on your own systems, within section 4.
  • Combine the Data with your own data or other sources you have rights to.

3. What you can’t do

  • Redistribute the raw Data. That means no reselling, sublicensing, publishing it as a dataset, feed or API, or letting your users download or bulk-export it. Showing prices for the products and baskets a user is looking at is fine.
  • Use the Data to build or supply a competing grocery price dataset or price API.
  • Get around quotas or rate limits, for example by sharing keys, opening extra accounts or scraping the Loyalty Hub website.
  • Present the Data as official retailer pricing, or suggest that a retailer or Loyalty Hub endorses your product.
  • Use the Data for anything unlawful or misleading.

4. Caching and history

  • Refresh current prices at least once every 24 hours. If you show a price older than that, label it with its date. Every response includes meta.updated_at for this.
  • Don’t show a price more than 7 days old as a current price.
  • You may keep price history you received while your subscription was active and use it inside your product.
  • If your account ends, stop using the raw Data and delete it within 30 days. You can keep aggregates that don’t let anyone rebuild individual prices, such as an average saving per user or a monthly basket index.

5. Attribution

Wherever you show prices from the API, show “Prices via Loyalty Hub” close to them, linked to loyaltyhub.co.za. In a native app where a link isn’t practical, the text alone is fine, as long as you also list Loyalty Hub as the source on an about or settings screen.

Also tell users the prices are indicative. For example: “Prices are collected from retailer websites and may differ in store.” Attribution doesn’t apply to internal tools that your customers never see.

6. Retailer names, logos and images

Retailer names, logos, trademarks and product images belong to the retailers and brand owners, not to us. These terms give you no rights in them. You can use a retailer’s name to say where a price came from. Anything beyond that, including logos, is between you and that retailer. image_url points to the retailer’s own image, and you’re responsible for whether and how you use it.

Loyalty Hub isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by any retailer in the Data.

7. About the Data

We collect prices from retailers’ public websites. They can lag shelf prices, miss in-store or card-only specials, or contain errors. Retailers can change their sites at any time, so coverage of a retailer, product or field can change or stop, sometimes without notice. If a retailer asks us to, or the law requires it, we may remove that retailer’s Data. We’ll tell you when that happens, and you’ll need to stop using that retailer’s Data within 30 days.

8. Plans, quotas and billing

Plans, prices and limits are listed on the developers page. Paid plans are billed monthly in advance through PayFast and you can cancel at any time. Cancelling stops the next charge. We don’t refund part-months. We’ll give you at least 30 days’ email notice before we raise the price of your plan or cut its limits. We may throttle or pause usage that looks like bulk extraction or puts the service at risk.

9. API keys

Keep your keys secret and call the API from your server, not from code your users can read. You’re responsible for all usage on your keys. If you think a key has leaked, revoke it in the console.

10. Availability and changes

We aim to keep the API up and the Data fresh, but there’s no uptime or freshness guarantee unless we’ve agreed one in writing. We’ll give at least 14 days’ notice before a breaking change to an /api/v1 endpoint, unless a security issue or a retailer’s request means we have to act sooner.

11. Suspension and termination

You can stop using the API and close your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you breach these terms, don’t pay, or use the API in a way that harms us, retailers or other customers. Where it’s reasonable, we’ll warn you first and give you a chance to fix the problem. We may also discontinue the API with 30 days’ notice. If we do, we’ll refund any period you’ve paid for but can’t use. Sections 3, 4, 6, 7, 12 and 13 continue after your access ends.

12. Liability

The API and Data are provided as is. To the extent the law allows, we give no warranties about accuracy, completeness or fitness for a particular purpose. We aren’t liable for indirect or consequential loss, such as lost profit or decisions made on a wrong price. Our total liability to you is limited to the fees you paid us in the three months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act, 2008 that can’t be limited.

13. Indemnity

You’re responsible for your product and how you present the Data. If a third party makes a claim against us because of your breach of these terms or your use of retailer names, logos or images, you’ll cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it.

14. Enterprise agreements

If you need higher volumes, an SLA or different terms, get in touch. A signed agreement with us takes priority over these terms where they differ.

15. General

The law of the Republic of South Africa governs these terms. We may update these terms. For changes that reduce your rights, we’ll email the account holder at least 30 days before they take effect. Using the API after that date means you accept the new terms. If any part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies.

The API has been available since July 2026, and these are its first published terms. They apply to new accounts straight away and to accounts created before 1 October 2026 from 31 October 2026.
